Ativan (Lorazepam) falls under the benzodiazepine group and it acts as a central nervous system depressant like other members of this group. Ativan and other members of benzodiazepine family are often connected with causing several psychiatric disorders like dementia. Does Ativan cause dementia? This was the question which rose among the people. It was a deceptive concept that prevailed in general people and among researchers, due to some symptoms showed by Ativan users. Recent studies have falsified these deceptive concepts of people about this hoax.
Why Ativan is linked with dementia?
Dementia is a severe mental disorder and the most common symptoms of it are memory loss, impaired thinking and twisted personality. As Ativan is a kind of drug that targets the central nervous system for working and the side effects of it are slow heart rate, hypotension etc. Due to the side effects of the Ativan, people had developed this concept that Ativan promotes dementia. But the recent studies have falsified this old theory and have proved that among the other side effects of Ativan, this popular side effect called dementia is not included.
How the recent studies on Ativan proved the theory to be a hoax?
Over the years, the connection between Ativan and dementia has not been clear. Several studies claimed that this drug increases the threat of having psychiatric disease and many research works denied that fact. But recent researches have been able to show some light in this context and have been so far able to clear lorazepam’s name of this charge.
The studies pronounced that even the highest dosage of the medicine does not aid in developing dementia and if there are cases of people developing the disease after consuming Ativan, then that are due to the early symptoms, which had already been instilled in them and which got worse with time. This new research included several men and women as test subjects and the research is conducted for seven years. The use of Ativan among these people was being closely monitored and were tested for dementia every two years. The study concluded that only 23% of the people developed dementia that was also due to the fact that those people had Alzheimer’s syndrome.
The study proved that the old concept was just a hoax, as it is clear from the results that even the highest dosage for daily use of Ativan does not possess any threat regarding dementia. Although it may not cause dementia, frequent usage can cause abuse of Ativan. The people who develop dementia are due to a term known as reverse causation. That is the latent symptoms of the dementia, that are already instilled in them and that gets worse with time and there is no link between the drug called Ativan and this psychiatric disease.
Ativan produces other physiological and psychological complications as a result of drug withdrawal or interaction with other substances, but the concept of Ativan aiding in the development of dementia is deceptive and false and the recent study just proved that it is just a hoax among people.
